Dog Parks

Do people take their Westies to dog parks and let them run off leash? My 4-year old Westie, Winston, has lots of running energy. I know he would love to run around a dog park. But I have heard that Westies are not particularly trustworthy off leash. What sought of training issues should I work on before I take him to the dog park?
