My Westie, Mac, has had an allergic rash about the same as you describe and most of the time will get an infection in part of It seesm worse this year. It mostly goes away in the winter but is bad the rest of the year. I, too, have made multiple trips to the vet and he usuall scrapes the rash and then gives him an antibiotic and medicine called Atopica. Nothing seems to work until the weather changes though. I thought about giving him prednisone but I don't know how it would act with the Atopica, which he has taken for about three years. Mac is nine years old now and I have had him since he was three. When his previous owner brought him here he looked perfect and I did not notice any rash at that time. I am at my wits end as to what to do. The vet visits and meds are more than I can really afford, and he also gets a weekly bath with special shampoo weekly, by the groomer. I feel badly for this poor sweet dog. He also gets eye infections or goopy eyes and usually has to have a cream for that. If you find a solution or if the prednisone is helping could you please let me know? I know Westie's tend to allergies but Mac is really the only one I know of that has this and the rash is nasty Good luck and I will be hopeful for your Westie and Mac.
