Benadryl for itchy babies....

Hello Fellow Westie Lovers! My poor babies... a Westie and a Cairn terrier have been so itchy since we moved to a humid climate from the dessert. Our vet put them on a steroid which put made them put on weight and drink so much water that they couldn't hold in their urine. It was so sad. Someone suggested children's Benadryl (just a half of pill) but I am so scared of hurting my precious girls. Has anyone tried this? Can you please suggest something to help us out? They eat terrier specific food from a pet store so I don't think that it is their diet. Please help!!! Elizabeth
