My five year old Westie has been scratching his chest (looks weird) he does it when he is standing. He also has an opaque thin-film in his eye. I have been irrigating his eye with "natural tears" (thimerasol free)and the goop seems to float above the drops and then I can tissue it out. Of course, my baby is very cooperative with this. He is so sweet and never seems to be adverse to me doing anything. Even if it is uncomfortable for him. He also has an unpleasant odor most of the time shortly almost within 24 hours of being groomed (they say they express his anal glands with every grooming). I wash him at home periodically (not too often) but he just seems to smell "sour". He almost immediately "rubs" himself all over a floor rug or when we lived in a house with a pool (he LOVED to swim) he would "rub" himself all over the grass when he got out. We have't lived with a pool for over a year, so that is why I am thinking this is possibly due to food or allergies or a combination of both after reading the posts here. He also rubs the sides of his face all over the rugs. Could this be ear infections? We have a great vet, but when she has looked in his ears before, she doesb't see anything. We have a mini schnauzer who always shows some kind of ear infection. Does anyone have any ideas for me? Also, I have heard of people having their vets remove the dogs anal glands. Has anyone done this or have experience with it? I don't want to do it if it isn't necessary. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks ahead of time. Crockett's mom
