Just a thought. Westies 'go to ground', it's what they were bred for; to hunt small prey. Possibly it's nothing more than an instinct thing. He's naturally carting his 'prey' around. Our Westie almost always has a toy in his mouth, usually trying to get us to play. If we don't, he plays all alone tossing the toy across the room and stalking it, then prancing all over only to 'kill' it, toss it and retreive it again. Sometimes he'll just stand over the toy like a statue, staring at it before he pounces and runs off with it.
