adding a second dog

My Westie, Cali, is a little over 3 yrs. old. We have adopted a Australian Cattle Dog mix who is about 10 months old. Cali is my best friend - she is very social & loves company, but she isn't reacting well to the newbie at all. She isn't mean to him, but there is a lot of tension, & she isn't herself. We have only had him 3 nights, but I don't think it's going to work. Does anyone have any advice? How long should I give this situation to turn around? The lady who adopted the newbie to me was fostering him, & I'm sure she would take him back. He is very sweet, but Cali just seems to not want him around. I don't want to upset her. Any advice/info you have would be great. Thank you.
