Hi Dani:
My poor Thor McGavin is a 9 year old westie male. Has had a wonderfully healthy life, aside of some strange things...(eye growths, eating diaper rash ointment etc.) Westies certainly have their "traits" they are stubborn and do what they want.........but Thor was also a healthy guy until last year. The licking paws started a few years ago. It would start in Aug and end with the first frost. If the licking got unbearable at night (aside from pink/brown paws) I would give him some antihistamine for a short time. Last winter he started getting patches on his back, groin, paws, etc. They said an autoimmune allergy type problem. He always ate non-processed, no preservative food.....I relented and put him on prednisone, antibiotics etc. ended up with a whopping yeast infection that is in all 4 paws and his tush! fixed it with meds, and it's back. I too want his "elder years" to be comfortable and I hate seeing him suffer and I hate giving him drugs........have you found anything that works? I have a product called para yeast and digestive enzymes as well as putting yogurt in food daily. Oh, let's not forget the 2x per week bathing in either Selzen Blue or Tar shampoo......he smells good, but who has time???? I won't even let him have a bite of pizza crust anymore and that's his favorite thing on earth!
