: history of this site was their a coal
: mine or railway yard here
:
The railway to Barnard Castle went on across Stainmore Summit to Tebay in Westmoreland. Coal from the Durham coalfields was hauled across the Pennines by engines from Fylands Sheds. I believe some of that coal was washed of dust before shipment on the site you mention. My cousin Norman Clark who still resides in West Auckland served as a fireman on those coal trains, and later on the shunting engines on the washery site. Someone might like to get the true facts from him.
