West Auckland was served by three schools during WWII. From 5-8yrs we went to the Millbank Primary School (building now a Youth Club) opposite the Mill; then from 8-11 we switched to the mixed Elementary School at St Helens; and after sitting the 11+ exam one either went to Copeland Lane (sic) or to Grammar School in Bishop Auckland. In those days Copeland Lane had not been tarmac-ed through to Evenwood and was literally a lane. The name was changed to Copeland Road much later. I imagine therefore that Copeland Lane Secondary School is the answer to your query, and its Head Master in those days was a Mr.Watson who lived at 45 Darlington Road - one of the very few houses on the west side of Darlington Road still standing.
