The 'picture house' you mention was the Ranch (as EVERYONE in West called it, although its official title was The Grand), and it was indeed on what is now called the East Green, where the Old Folks' Home now is. The first five or so rows from the screen were wooden forms, boys on the right, girls on the left, and in our day (the 1940s) the cost of sitting there was fivepence, the "bouncer" being an affable gentleman called Pie Clark. Happy days.
