Posted by Keith House on 12/11/2004, 10:11 pm, in reply to "Re: The Red Lion Pub/ Lockey Yard" I can't help you with Red Lion but I know where Lockeys Yard was. It was on North side of Front Street about midway between what is now Devonshire House Nursing Home and The Fleece . It was accessed by a passage . The houses were demolished in 1970's, I think, and the passage seems to have been converted to a entrance to one of the houses. I will email you 2 photos - one showing location about 1910 and another recent showing as it is now. On the old photo the "passage" is just right of centre (the street name plate is above the entrance). There appears to be 2 pubs close together. I know 1 of these is Rose and Crown. Could the other be Red Lion? The old photo is in a book of old West Auckland photos mentioned on this site and also in a book called The People History Gaunless Valley by Tom Hutchinson. --Previous Message--

: Further to my earlier messages on
: this subject. I now know that the
: highest numbered house in Front
: Street is 76 (ish). There isn't
: numbers in the 170s.
:
: I also know that old pubs is a topic
: in West Life, the village
: newsletter. I have written to Cllr.
: Martin Roberts on the subject.
: However I am still looking for this
: ex-pub. I presume it is now
: someone's home. In the 1901/1891
: census it is on Front Street next to
: Lockeys Yard (not Lockey's Bus
: Garage which was later and off
: Station Road.). I cannot find
: Lockeys Yard on a current A-Z nor
: could I find it during a visit to
: West last Thursday. There were
: houses in Lockeys Yard at that time.
: Help please.
