Elaine, if you enter the "Google search engine" using "Gaugers Arms", you will find an article entitled :- Brusselton "Sparrowcock" Colliery and Others, by John Barraclough. In the article you will read that Gaugers Arms was the name of one of two drifts on the Morley road off the A68 which runs between West Auckland and Toft Hill. The article also refers to the location as Ramshaw Colliery. I am sure there must have been some form of housing established in the immediate area
The article is a very good potted history of the mine workings in South West Durham
