In the 1940s I can remember 9 boys from Darlington Road who went to B.A.G.S.(now, because of a witless decision of the education "experts", sadly no more). They were John White (from the farm), Ken Alderson (at the Hummerbeck end), Buster Lamb, John Heaviside, Eddie Kears, Stan Howe, Eric Oliphant, a Scots boy (whose name escapes me) who lived in the bungalow at number 29, and myself (whose name doesn't escape me). I suspect that this is a record for intellectual achievement in such a short space,at least for the colliery villages round about - Bishop, especially the Cockton Hill district, was of course a special case.
