I cannot answer your direct question but my one of my great grandmothers surname was Hogg. Margaret Patterson (nee Hogg) was born 8 Jul 1859 at Lane Ends Escomb and died 4 Jun 1916 at 27 Staindrop Road West Auckland. I have details of her ancestors going back a further four generations to John Hogg = Mary Hetherington of about 1775 or so. I don't have their dates but their son Robert Hogg was baptised in 1796 so I am estimating the 1775 date. This ancestor was born at "Burnhouses" (sic) possibly Burnthouses and his wife Mary at Stanhope.
