CENSUS CONFUSION
I suspect the original posting may be due to confusion in the 1901 (or earlier) census. The number shown in this census is NOT a house number but is the census taker's "No. In schedule". The next column is headed "ROAD STREET &c and name or number or NAME of HOUSE". In all the census that I have seen for WEST AUACKLND from 1841 to 1901, only the Road or Street Name is given WITHOUT any house number. I made a similar mistake when looking for THE RED LION pub on Front Street. In this case in the 1891 Census the Reference Number for this pub is given as 197 but Front Street's house numbers stop well short of this number.
I wonder when house numbers were adopted in WEST AUCKLAND. Its possibly the this was not done until way after 1901. After all who needed them? At the turn of the nineteenth century whilst family sizes were large. The number od family groups (surnames) would be very small so directions to an individual's home would be straight-forward, probably consisting of "third house along after The Fleece on Front Street - the one with the green door". The postman would live in the village and would know EVERYONE'S names and where they lived.

: Sorry, there never was a #194
: Darlington Rd in West Auckland. I
: had the good fortune to be born at 1
: Darlington Road at the north end of
: the street in 1932, but before WWII
: started the family moved to 46
: Darlington Rd at the southern end
: (literally). 46 still stands but the
: rest of the original street has
: gone. There are 'new' houses on the
: opposite side of the road now, but
: how these were numbered and if they
: retain the Darlington Rd name I
: would not know.
: There are many 'Darlington Road's in
: other local villages, and even a
: 'West Auckland Road' in Darlington;
: the latter might well go up to #194.
: Who are these Canadians with
: possible roots in West Auckland?
: With regard to #31 Darlington Road,
: the still redoubtable West Auckland
: figure of Arthur Towers was born
: there or thereabouts. Someone should
: tap his memory.
