Servings: 8
2 cups almonds, or nuts of choice *See notes
2 cups dried figs, or dates or apricots
1/2 lb salami slices, or other Italian cold cuts. At least 3-4 slices per jar. *See notes
1/2 lb cheddar cubes, At least 2-3 cubes per jar. *See Notes
8 Perlini mozzarella balls, *See Notes
4 oz brie bites, 8 small pieces of brie
8 beef sticks , or meat wrapped mozzarella sticks, one per jar.
16 pitted olives, to top the skewers. Any variety you like, 2 per skewer.
1 cup gherkin pickles, and/or cocktail onions, marinated peppers (from the olive bar) These are for topping the skewers, too.
2 cups fresh berries, such as blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. Plan on one skewer per jar.
16 cheese straws, Use one or two breadsticks or cheese straws, and several crackers per jar. *See Notes
8 sprigs fresh thyme, or rosemary or marjoram, for garnish.
Start with a layer of nuts and dried fruits at the bottom of each of your jars or glasses.
Construct your skewers. You can do this in lots of different variations. Fold sliced meats in quarters or roll them before threading. You can mix meat and cheese, or do them separately. Top each skewer with a pickle or other small item. Thread berries onto their own skewers.
Begin by adding your skewers to your jars. Use about 3 per jar.
Add any stand alone items like meat or cheese sticks next. If you have space you can add sliced apple, grapes, or baby cucumber spears.
Add bread sticks and crackers. Then insert the herb sprig. You're ready to serve!
Notes
Nuts – almonds, spiced pecans, macadamias, cashews, or mixed nuts are all good choices.
Italian cold cuts – Salami, prosciutto, coppa, calabrese, peperoni, sopressata, etc. Plan for 3-4 slices per jar.
Hard cheese cubes – Good choices are cheddar , Jarlsberg, Manchego, or whatever you love. Plan on 2-3 cubes per jar.
Mozzarella – There are several sizes of mozzarella balls. You want the smallest of them, which are known as Perlini. Ciliegine is another, slightly larger, option.
Crackers – Add tall breadsticks for height, and wedge small crackers into available spaces. Use one or two sticks and several crackers per jar.
