Turtle fighting?

A friend of mine was at a pool in the country one day. He told me that he saw a group of different size turtles watching a fight between two turtles, and they fought until one of them died. Then another turtle came out of the group, and fought the winner to the death also. This went on until only one turtle was left alive. What is the deal, has anybody ever saw or heard of anything like this???
