-------------------------------------------------
2 - cups all purpose flour
3½ - teaspoons baking powder
¼ to ½ cup white sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup butter (very cold)
1 egg slightly beaten plus enough milk to make 2/3 cup
-------------------------------------------------
Combine all dry ingredients and cut in butter as you would for pastry leaving small lumps of butter. This is what will make them light and flaky. Add liquids and blend just until moistened.
Let the dough sit for 5 minutes and then roll out to about 1/2 inch thick or desired thickness and bake in a 400 oven for about 12-15 minutes or until tops are lightly browned.
NOTE: When I serve these with spaghetti I add 1/2 tsp of both garlic and onion powder and 1 cup of grated cheese to the biscuit dough and bake using the same oven temp and time.
I add the 1/2 cup of sugar when using this recipe for my strawberry shortcakes but any other time I just use 1/4 cup.
