Posted by PAUL Reds vow to make star buys May 7 2003 The Anfield chief executive has reassured fans the Reds will be strengthened with "quality not quantity" even if the they miss out on a potential £20million jackpot at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool must beat Chelsea to pip the Londoners to the final Champions League place on Sunday or face the prospect of champions Manchester United striding even further away from them financially. Arsenal have already admitted they will be limited to wheeling and dealing in the summer as they look to recover from losing their Premiership crown to United an d finance the move to a new stadium at Ashburton Grove. But Parry has declared that even if Liverpool fail to secure Europe's riches Houllier will still be handed the war-chest needed to bring top quality stars to Anfield. "We have got a shortlist of players - it is quite a long shortlist at the moment - and it is something we're working on all the time," he said. "I'm reasonably hopeful that the sort of players we will be bringing in will please the fans and have them on the edge of their seats. "We want them to be players who will make a significant improvement." Liverpool have been linked with a host of players, but the prime targets are Damien Duff, Steve Finnan, Steed Malbranque, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Djibril Cisse (above left). If the Reds fail to win at Stamford Bridge, they will be consigned to the UEFA Cup where even the winners rarely manage to pick up much more than £10m from their success. With United raking in the cash at a 68,000-capacity Old Trafford plus getting an eighth successive crack at the Champions League, Liverpool are in danger of falling further behind financially. With a ground capacity 24,000 smaller than United's and more than £1m extra being earned at Old Trafford with every game, that gap is widening by the match. But Parry insists Liverpool are intent on pursuing the class acts that can at least narrow the divide in Premiership terms. "We will be bringing in new players," he said. "There'll certainly be a couple. It's about quality and not quantity this summer. We have a big squad now and enough players. "It's a case of identifying those of real quality who can make a difference for us." He added: "It will be a disappointment and a blow if we are not in the Champions League but it wouldn't be fatal and we would bounce back. "Money is tight in the game at the moment but we haven't overstretched ourselves. Failure to qualify for the Champions League isn't going to stop us spending a bit of money so our fans can be reassured on that score."
