VW Golf Mk V 2.0 TDi 2007 - Cam belt fault - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 2.0 tdi

volkswagen golf 2.0tdi engine code bmn (170)
hi all, this car was recoverd to me by the aa, they had found that the cambelt tensioner nut had came lose,and had broke the tensioner,so we fitted a genuine cambelt kit and replaced the water pump, we used the correct timming pins,and torqed all bolts, including the tensioner 20nm + 45 degrees (bit tricky) the car has just been recoverd back to me with the same fault,(tensioner nut lose) has any one came across this before??? many thanks

Hi Paul,
On a Audi A6 when removing nut from tensioner,it stripped threads in housing,got sorted by fitting time-sert,and getting new bolt made up in machine shop.Might be worth checking stud in housing.

Hi Paul

I did a Seat Ibiza 1.9 TDi on Friday and the tensioner kit now comes with new mounting studs and nuts, both have to be replaced or warranty will be invalidated

touran 2 weeks ago, 3 bent valves and all rockers bent,, tensioner bolt stripped threads in head 3 days after cambelt change. unfortunatly it was the last job my colleage done before he left so job was given to me.
the head boys who reconditioned the head had done 2 others within the 10 days before ours so it seems a common problem.

FIXED

When we fitted first belt kit we replaced stud for tensioner when it came back the stud had snapped off flush with head. we got specialist out to drill out stud and fit a heli coil.weve fitted a new belt kit and reassembled it and engine runs fine. just worried how it happened in the first place.may be cam lobes worn causeing vibration? car has done 145000 miles.dont want it comming back again.can i put in writing that possible engine wear i cannot guarantee this? we had this happen to us about 2weeks ago we had put new belt on about a month ago came back with belt slack after talking to a volkswagen tech he said it was a known problem when the belt had been changed more than once vw changed the diameter of the stud on the 2litre and when you tighten it 20nm plus 45 degrees it stretches the thread in the head they always remove stud and inspect if in dought repair we have learnt the hard way it cost us a head hope this may help someone

Hi Mark

When you say VW changed the diameter of the bolt, do you mean they reduced it, causing the problem or they increased it to overcome the problem.

I have a reason for asking, but thankfully its not me that"s in the s***.

After following this tread & having a few of these to do I chased down the Contitech & Gates technical service to find out if they knew of this problem or the VAG TSB. Contitech & Gates both have technical bulletin on this problem. The Contitech TSB extract is listed below even though they don't supply the stud in their kit

Failure of the belt drive as a result of the tension pulley breaking off
after breakage of stud bolt CT 1028 K2/K3/K4, CT 1051 K1/K2
(VW/Audi TDI PD 1.9/2.0 L)
Power Transmission Group
Automotive Aftermarket
ContiTech Antriebssysteme

Concern:
Belt drive failure soon after installation
of the kit due to the tension
pulley breaking off.

Cause:
The tension pulley was unable to gain
full supporting purchase on the
engine. This resulted in the action of
lateral forces on the stud bolt, which
subsequently broke.

Remedy:
The stud bolt must always be inserted
as far as it will go into the engine so
that the screwed-on contact surface
of the tension pulley can be fully
supported on the cylinder block
without any additional loads being
generated.

At least this confirms a problem exists.
You made reference to a VW TSB. Do you know if one exists in relation to this?

No. Sorry Contitech said they did not know of a VAG TSB. They said from their experience it was that the stud unscrewed a little when the nut was removed & so the thread on the stud into the engine was not supported fully & so it sheared off, which makes sense as does the comment about it being a stretch bolt.
