Sorry, i didnt make myself clear.

With the timing "adjusted" the engine is perfectly smooth The compressions, hydralic lifters etc are fine. (though it loses power when driven, this is a fueling issue, not an engine mechanical one! any noise is diesel knock, not mechanical contact)

the cam/crank timing was ok despite the poor condition of the belt assembly (I checked this before removing the old one)

This is basically a VW diesel so keyways arnt an issue on the camshaft (and though I have come accross loose crank sprockets in the past on these engines, this is not the case here)

IE the engine will only run if the pump timing is moved well away from the "Setting point" (as defined by the pump timing lock pin IYSWIM)

This appears to have happened suddenly and is (apparrantly) coincident with running low on fuel (though I cannot see the link myself)

There is something internal to the pump that has radically altererd its internal workings.

I am wondering if the external solenoid (which I am thinking is some sort of advance switch) could make this much diference if it failed? I would be surprised however, I would expect such a switch to make "Small" diferences in injection timing but not something as radical as this.

I may well be able to twiddle the pump untill the engine rus OK (like twisting an old distributer to stop pinking) but that wont answer the question as to what is going on.
