Tom, I want to thank you and your wife, Maria, for your help at the APF Texas State. It always helps to have some good judges at these bigger meets. You guys ran a pretty good platform.
I thought it was a good meet except for the number of squat dumps. I have never had that many bars dumped on my backspotters before in 15 years of putting on meets. I counted 8 dumps where the lifter let go of the bar. One of my backspotters was hit twice across the forearms and the other took a bar in the face. Other than the dumps, the spotters caught everything.
What do you think, Tom? Automatic DQ on any dump off the back. If the guy dumps it over his head, that's almost always not done on purpose because it will give you a pretty good whack in the back of the head and the spotters are mostly out of the way. Spotting is pretty straightforward with a Monolift because the lifter is not walking out and the back and side spotters can "catch" the lifter early enough that the re-rack should be pretty easy on a missed lift. But an off the back dump is extremely dangerous for all the spotters. You know yourself it's hard enough to find qualified spotters who don't mind the work without making the job hazardous.
Any comments, anybody, on the automatic DQ for any off the back squat dump? Not trying to be a hard ass, just trying not to get anyone killed.
