That was easier to find than I expected! I searched facebook for "spice" and came up with over 500 results... I was worried... but there it was on pg 2. Thank goodness.
It's funny to try to describe the sort of performance I studied because it's the sort of thing where descriptions seem boring, loony, or... well...
Any way, as of last year I've got my Master of Fine Arts and have focused on Performance Art for the last 6(ish?) years. The wikipedia (though it doesn't tell you what odd things I've been doing for the last 6ish years) actually has an alright general description of "performance art", and there's a HUGE spread of what happens under that term.
As a grad student I taught a class on DADA and was recommending watching Monty Python's Flying Circus as an example of something more recent done with a somewhat similar spirit. Sadly I did not actually get to watch Monty Python with the students. Oh well.
One of the cool things about it is that I've been able to travel (on the school's dime) to Belarus (1st time out of the US) and Indonesia (2nd time out of the US) for festivals. Sadly though, one doesn't often make money making the art, so I'm hoping to one day find a job teaching it. In the mean time my goal is to get to at least one international festival a year, and more if I can somehow afford it. For whatever reason(s) the type of work I do isn't very common in the US, but there is an active international community.
So, yeah. This summer I'll be going to Beijing, where I don't think I'm allowed to mention Tianamen Square, and definitely NOT the Dalai Lama, unless I really want to get arrested. And if I keep on this trend of traveling I, just as my advisor does, will be getting funny looks each time some US official looks at my passport. She's had more than funny looks.
But I didn't actually say what I do... Umm... RUN AWAY!!!
I ought to put more documantation of my work online, because it's both diverse and related, and I'm not always so good at summing it up. Usually I start rambling on telling stories or clam up and get awkward depending on who I'm talking to. The one video I have up is here: elapse festival piece It's of a 30 hour piece - condensed into under 1 hour! If you're interested in looking at it, I recommend letting it load so you can further speed it up, or skip ahead as desired. The other video I have up on that site, I haven't looked at since I was working on my thesis show, so I don't know anymore how embarrassed I'll be by others watching/listening to it. For my thesis show I had done some performance work at my grandparents' mostly abandoned farm and reworked the video documentation into an installation.
Ok... I'm done for tonight.
