I am also fascinated by the Bell, Glasgow, Export Plates. http://www.bellsglasgowpottery.com/ This is a PDF document Chapter XXIII: The Export Wares - this is the chapter you want to read. It is fascinating. Most of the designs were made in Indonesia, Malaysia and other South East Asian countries, but the mfr. was in Glasgow. Maastricht, in Holland,precisely poached a number of the same designs. I have about 12-14 plates, mostly reds and greens. I admit I am a technological neophyte, but I try.... Facebook no longer supports Albums on Facebook, but my photos are on Picasa. If you can tell me how to send the pics to you, I will gladly do so. I am glad that there are a few of us who appreciate these extraordinary plates. Sarah

I gave up my job as a museum curator principally to investigate this fascinating subject. I have been grant-aided a dozen times to travel throughout South-East Asia, and have spent about five years there in total. I am now endeavouring to write it all up ~ it will come to at least 50,000 words! Best wishes, Graeme

It is hard to know where the designs were completed, and where the manufacturing occured, apart from Bell and Maastricht. The small collection I have was bought a couple of years ago, from another collection. I haven't found more of these since then! I look forward to your research and the ultimate book on the subject. I would imagine you resources are either in Scotland or S. E. Asia, but let me know if you think there might be sources in New York. All the best! Sarah

As you are in New York, there is another aspect of Scottish pottery export wares concerning which you could possibly be of assistance, if you would be so kind. In 1926 or thereby, the great Links Pottery of David Methven & Sons in Kirkcaldy, Fife, foudered. One of the principal reasons was connected with a huge order from a firm in New York. I recently stumbled upon what I believe to be the name of that firm : it was B. Altman & Co. New York Public Library say they have no material of relevance; do you happen to know of any other possible source? Cheers, Graeme

Glasgow, Export Plates with Asian Motifs" Apologies in the delayed response. I don't watch this Board often enough! B. Altman & Co. was a very important retailer in New York. Benjamin Altman traveled frequently and was especially interested Asian ceramics, especially Chinese ceramics, and carpets, and that was his specialty in retailing. The company closed in the early 1970s. I have a souvenir tablecloth from the closing sale, but nothing of significance. He was a donor to many museums. I will be busy with a Show next week. There are a few possible New York City sources: (A) Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum -www.cooperhewitt.org/ (B)Museum of the City of New York : www.mcny.org/ (C)New-York Historical Society - www.nyhistory.org/ Remind me in Feb. and I will make a couple of phone calls to these museums. I own only 4, but have entered dozens in the database. If you use the General Search and type in South East Asia, you will find 50 plates of that type in alphabetical order. Most are by J & M P Bell, although there are some by Robert Cochran and Adams. And if you have any patterns -- or different color combinations -- I would be happy to have photos in order to add them to the database. Thank you for contacting us.
