Looking for pattern name - black with splashed luster glaze Posted by Amanda on February 22, 2011, 6:54 pm 129.15.127.224 This piece is part of a much larger type collection of transferware pieces that I have been researching over the last several weeks. It is from a child's tea set. The print is black, shows two cows, a goat, and children, and is marked on the bottom with "DAVENPORT". It has a splashed pink luster glaze. Does anyone recognize this pattern? Thus far, I have only been able to confirm that Davenport made the "Muleteer" and "Villaris" pattern in black with the pink luster glaze from Punchard's 1996 book Playtime Pottery and Porcelain.

Re: Looking for pattern name - black with splashed luster glaze Posted by David H. on February 23, 2011, 1:22 am, in reply to "Re: Looking for pattern name - black with splashed luster glaze" 75.36.136.86 Hi Amanda, we have a similar scene on a large jug in the Database, with a TCC assigned name of Scottish Pastoral, with cows and a man/woman (nursing a child), also with the same DAVENPORT printed mark and also with the pink tinted glaze. Probably from the same series as your cup/saucer. The jug's border is similar to the interior of the cup. I would think this particular pattern (actually two patterns) would be documented somewhere.

Davenport patterns & archaeology Posted by Len on February 26, 2011, 9:54 am, in reply to "Re: Looking for pattern name - black with splashed luster glaze" 24.231.246.205 Amanda, some years ago I had a fascinating correspondence with an archaeologist affiliated with the University of Oklahoma (I think it was) who had bought a Davenport plate from me on eBay. Part of his job was to excavate historical sites connected with the so-called Five Civilized Tribes - so called because they lived just like their neighbors of European descent, including using transferware dishes. Despite this they were moved off their ancestral lands in the southeastern U.S. to Oklahoma. He was particularly interested in dinnerware by Davenport because that company imported wares to New Orleans through Henderson & Hill and their successors. These wares would then have been available to the people in the Five Tribes both before and after their forced migration. Is this your area of interest as well?

I have since taken over the collection, since I am now studying a removal-period Choctaw plantation site established in the 1840s along the Red River. Other members of our staff have recently recovered pieces with Henderson and Hill marks, including a complete chamberpot from the officers' privy, from the site Ft. Gibson, near Muskogee. That portion of the fort was established in 1824 and abandoned in 1857. Amanda

Yes, it must have been Larry with whom I corresponded. He was very generous with his knowledge - I learned quite a lot, not only about the Choctaw, Cherokee and other tribes, but about the prehistory of the area which was really his first love research-wise. Of course here in the TCC we're always interested in knowing about transferware that comes out of the ground and about the people who used it. Thanks for sharing what has been found so far. We're all ears if you find out more!

To date none of the pattern books have ever been located. We have a partial list of named copper plates which were auctioned in 1887 plus named patterns on extant pieces. In addition, although the potters had some means of identifying the patterns to be transfer printed, often the pattern name was not included on the object. Possibly the name was not included on the copper plate or the additional time expended in cutting out and adding the name was not warranted in a piece work operation. Sorry not to be of much help. It would also be helpful to have a photo of the Davenport mark. I would also be interested in the dimensions of your cup. Frank Davenport has observed that the cup looks more like an "Etruscan" style demitasse than a cup from a children's tea service. Thank you for contacting our Message Board.
