I have a polychrome pearlware plate, about 6 inches across with a pastoral scene of woman and cottage. Near the bottom in the landscape area appears the name "Lavinia". Images are here:
Hi, Jim. Lavinia is a prominent figure in Roman Mythology. She was the wife of Aeneas (and daughter of one of the prominent kings, etc.). If you Google "Lavinia" you will find all sorts of information. It would not surprise me if she had something to do with the wheat harvest. Greek and Roman mythology is often found on transferware images and my guess is that your plate -- wonderful color and transfer by the way -- relates to one of the Roman myths. Others more versed in Roman Mythology than I may want to add to this, and I would be very curious to hear what they have to say. Good luck, Michael
