B.W. & Co. Mark Posted by Janice Adamson on September 2, 2009, 12:12 am 121.98.152.122 Hi I was wondering if anybody can shed any light on this. I have a plate in the Geneva pattern, (archaeological sample) - it is the same as that identified on the TCC website as being made by John Wedg Wood. The garter mark on the back is also the same, aside from the mark reading B.W. & Co. on the ribbon. It looks like the pattern name ends with a NE, suggesting this maker changed the name (shame I can't find the rest of it). Given it's the same design as John Wedg Wood's, I'm thinking this must be Buckley Wood & Co. (1875-1885 in Godden)and there must have been a relationship between the two Wood's, but can't find any reference to this. Can anyone help? I know this is obscure but there may be a Wood expert out there. Thanks  Post a Response

Mark" 84.92.89.69 BW&Co could be Bates, Walker & Co of Dale Hall Works, Burslem active 1875-1878 or Buckley, Wood & Co of High Street Pottery, Burslem active 1873-1885. The pattern is Rhine, which is similar to John Wedg Wood's Geneva, but if you could see more of the shard I am pretty certain that you would find the castle more solid and less ornate that that in the Geneva pattern. Rhine and Geneva are significantly different in detail, although broady similar in concept. Rhine was made by a number of different makers. I have no record of either the Bates or the Buckley partnership making Rhine. However, as you say, the backstamp on the shard is similar to the style of John Wedg Wood's backstamps, so it is possible there is a connection, although I do not know of one. (Yet!) Mark" 121.98.152.122 Hi Andrew Thanks for you reply, however I'm 100% convinced the pattern is the same as John Wedg Woods's Geneva and not Rhine. Rhine's one of the most common found in archaeological sites here, and there are differences in the border design that are subtle, but definite. I also think enough of the castle is present to show it's the same central pattern as John Wedge Wood's Geneva. Of course, whether this manufacturer B.W. & Co. called it Geneva or Rhine is unclear as the pattern name is the missing link, and now the rest of the site is under a shopping complex. At least it's a decent sized sherd, unlike most of them we have to deal with! Thanks.  Post a Response
