Identification - Tiger scene with acanthus border Posted by Lisa Hudgins on June 15, 2009, 11:58 am 129.252.69.180 Greetings! I am trying to identify this pattern which was excavated from a site in South Carolina (see below). We have pieces from 2 sizes of platters, 2 plates, and a cup and saucer. It is a boldly designed blue and white transferware pattern with acanthus leaves on the rim. To the right of center is a tiger being approached by dogs. The accompanying teacup has a scene of an elephant ridden by 2 people, with what appear to be natives carrying a deer or antelope tied to a pole in the foreground. It is not the traditional "Tiger Hunt" pattern from Clews or Wood, but something a bit more dramatic in both the scene and the bold geometric border. So far I have looked in Williams, but don't have access to Coysh. No maker's mark is available. Any ideas would be appreciated.  Post a Response

The entry includes two source prints. The pattern is part of a series by an unknown maker. Take a look at the database for more information. Regards, Judie  Post a Response

(tiger, acanthus, indian scenes, geometric border, etc. ) I think it will take a little more experience with the database to ferret out these pattern names. Most grateful... Lisa  Post a Response

In this case, you need to 1. attain the Pattern Search Page; 2. Click on Show Predominant Features; type the word tiger in the Contains box; 4. Click the adjacent Search button; 5. checkmark Tiger and Tigers; Click on Search at bottom of page; 6. "Chasing a Tiger Across a River" is one of 14 or so patterns with the keyword/predominant feature word "tiger" or "tigers" that will come up. You can also search using the "Additional Information" field; however, in this case the editor did not use the term "tiger" in the "Additional Information", so your pattern does not come up under that search feature. I find that it is wise not to try searching Additional Information at the same time you search Predominant Features.  Post a Response

As an official newbie, I will take all of the advice and help I can get. The site I am working on has about 180 vessels, many of which are either diptware or transferware. Type just the word tiger in the Name space at the top of the page. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "Search". 16 patterns with descriptions and thumbnail photos come up. Chasing a Tiger.... is the second one up as the patterns are listed in alphabetical order. It is not necessary to know the complete pattern name to do a Search using the Name space.  Post a Response

For those who are interested. the image on the platter is actually derived from 2 aquatints: "Chasing a Tiger Across a River" and "A Tiger Hunted by Wild Dogs" part of "Oriental Field Sports, Wild Sports of the East" written by Capt Thomas Williamson, illustrated by Samuel Howitt. The teacup from this set has the scene depicted in "Return from Hog Hunting" - also part of the Oriental Field Sports series by Williamson and Howitt (c 1807).  Post a Response
