"American Express Train" by Adams from a Currier and Ives print Posted by Ruth Penka on May 26, 2009, 1:28 pm 66.65.243.22 I have received a question about this transferware plate in underglaze black with a floral border. I have not been able to find it in the TCC database as I am not clear as to the dates or the mark which includes N. Currier's Ad Symbol and the address of "2 Spruce St." Was this a series done by Adams (?Wm) and was it made after 1861? Any info would be much appreciated.  Post a Response

My mom has a set of these plates which she bought at auction in the mid 1960s, which includes the pattern you mention. As Connie says, they're all 20th century, but very attractive. Mom's set was retailed through B. Altman in NYC, and according to Furniss/Wagner these could date back to 1939 - no earlier than that.  Post a Response

Thank you to those who responded to my question. The person asking the question sent a scan of the plate, front and back which I had requested as it was impossible to find the pattern without further info. The series was made by Adams & Co. in the early 1940's from an 1864 Currier & Ives print of the "American Express Train." One of the TCC members' mothers has the series which she purchased from B. Adams & Sons, is discussed and many scenes illustrated in color on pages 184-186 in ADAMS CERAMICS by Furniss/Wagner,Wagner. The series of snow scenes was taken from the "American Days and Ways" engravings of Currier and Ives published from 1857 on; however, production by Adams was all in the 20th century. Newport shape: 1950s, Empress shape: 1960s, and Laurel shape: 1969 through at least 1977. Therefore you won't find information regarding the series in the TCC Database. Our dates are 1780 to 1900.  Post a Response
