Are my items so rare no-one has seen them before. Maybe this is a members only place.. Happens to me all of the time! Anyway, the transfer-printed brown, hollowware is most likely a sugar. It would originally have had a lid. The pattern is Washington Vase by Podmore Walker & Co. According to Godden (1964), the company was in business between 1834 and 1859. Snyder (2004) provides a date of circa 1849–1859 for a flow mulberry example of that particular pattern. Your piece could date anywhere between 1834 and 1859. No idea who made the plate. The pattern is “No. 40.” I know that Thomas Mayer made “31.” Perhaps your piece was made by his successor T.J. & J. Mayer? They were in business 1843–1855, and stylistically the design looks like something they might have made. Thurston  Post a Response

I appreciate the mention of the reference books. That will be the first to do. Get the books. Much rather have a book in hand. The Mayer boys that makes things a little clearer. Unfortunately, not all postings receive a response or at least a resolution of the enquiry, which you will see if you take a bit of time and scroll back through the many earlier postings. We are actively recruiting knowledgeable collectors to respond to postings such as yours; also unfortunately the "responsibility" seems to fall on only a few really conscientious and dedicated individuals. We have averaged 14 new postings each month for the past 15 months (not all of course an enquiry such as yours). I fear they may be a bit burned out. Sorry you hadn't gotten a response to your earlier posting. Probably because it's, as you surmise, no one has seen these patterns before and was unable to give you any specific information. In a general way I can tell you both these pieces date roughly to the 1840-1860 period. Your plate is called mulberry (for the sort of flow black effect it has) but I can't find anything on a "No. 40" pattern. Your sugar bowl is probably ironstone and printed with a typical Romantic pattern, though without a name it would be hard to ascribe it to any particular maker. If I find out more will let you know. I was not sure if it was the way I had asked the question or they were just hard to find items. I was told these were early pieces when I got them. The bowl came with a bunch of Wallis Gimson "Garfield" pieces I bought. It is not from that pattern. Too bad the mark on the plate is so fuzzy. I will find it in time. It will fall into my lap one day. Have any of you folks tried to clean transferware. Is it a good idea or is leaving it as is best. Thanks again, Fred  Post a Response

The Master Sugar Bowl is missing its lid. I kno Ellen R. Hill, could come up w/ the pattern & potter ("Mulberry Ironstone: Flow Blue's Best Kept Little Secret")But I'm pretty certain it is "Washington Vase" by Podmore Walker or Wedgwood Co., with a 1849 pattern registry. To be certainly certain (<; , a picture of the rim design always helps.  Post a Response

A plate in the pattern can be found in the TCC Database of patterns. Coysh & Henrywood in Vol. I of the Dictionary on p. 394 discuss the pattern, and Petra Williams illustrates and discusses Washington Vase on p. 84 of her Book I Staffordshire Romantic Transfer Patterns. In Book II, Williams tells us that the pattern has been found in lavender, medium blue, flow blue and mulberry.  Post a Response

Williams book I on eBay. Amazon sellers wanted over $100 for the book. I lucked out and got a signed copy for $35 or so. Now to find the others mentioned in the thread. It will also expose & probably ruin any hidden restorations!  Post a Response
