Fred, I know how you feel, you find a really nice piece and cant figure out the maker or pattern. Happens to me all of the time! Anyway, the transfer-printed brown, hollowware is most likely a sugar. It would originally have had a lid. The pattern is Washington Vase by Podmore Walker & Co. According to Godden (1964), the company was in business between 1834 and 1859. Snyder (2004) provides a date of circa 18491859 for a flow mulberry example of that particular pattern. Your piece could date anywhere between 1834 and 1859. No idea who made the plate. The pattern is No. 40. I know that Thomas Mayer made 31. Perhaps your piece was made by his successor T.J. & J. Mayer? They were in business 18431855, and stylistically the design looks like something they might have made. Thurston
