Davenport pottery from archaeological site Posted by Luned on May 11, 2009, 2:32 pm 98.18.6.85 Can anyone help me identify this Davenport pattern? I have several sherds from an archaeological site in Georgia. This piece, the largest, is probably from a gravy boat. There is a cup bottom in the same pattern that has a maker's mark corresponding to Duckworth's "Earthenware E9" (the version with DAVENPORT written on a ribbon draped across the anchor). The cup bottom interior has the same two Asian-style structures bordered by the same flower-and-diamond pattern visible at the top of the gravy boat sherd. A pattern name and any info on dating the pattern would be most welcome! Duckworth's estimate of 1830-1860 for the mark is consistent with other site details, but a tighter range would be helpful.  Post a Response

Re: Davenport pottery from archaeological site Posted by Connie Rogers on May 12, 2009, 2:37 pm, in reply to "Davenport pottery from archaeological site" 71.72.211.105 It looks to me like this pattern may be one of the scenes from a pattern called "Chinese Temples" by Williams/Weber in STAFFORDSHIRE II "Romantic Transfer Patterns", p. 90. A scene that differs slightly from the one shown there is in the TCC Database of Patterns, also titled "Chinese Temples". The TCC editor also notes that Williams/Weber shows a pattern by the same name on p. 91 by Wood & Challinor that is the same center pattern as the Davenport pattern in the database. It also has the little border shown in the shard and the same wide border on the rim as the Davenport marked plate. I cannot date the pattern more tightly than 1820-60 because the printed mark includes two palm trees and the figure of a man in addition to the Davenport name and anchor and is not found in DAVENPORT POTTERY AND PORCELAIN 1794-1887 by T.
