Transferware Coffeepot Posted by John T on January 27, 2009, 6:20 pm 78.144.17.54 I would be grateful for any information on an old and unusually patterned transferware coffeepot. There are no makers marks and the transfer extends to the bottom of the piece. It came from a farm in the UK situated some 30 miles from Stoke on Trent. I have been told the pattern is meant to mimic the grain of wood and is referred to as "Deco Bois", but I have been unable to find any similarly decorated item. I have seen teapots with this type of decoration, sometimes with a motto or verse in a cartouche although I would have thought they were of earlier date than your coffee pot. In Michael Berthoud & Richard Maskell's 'Directory of British Teapots' plate 2084 shows a teapot with this type of decoration made by Edge Malkin c1875. ebay ended item 220342234761 is also similar. (interestingly, 'attributed to Sunderland Lustre'!)  Post a Response
