Help with a copeland and garrett pattern Posted by chris on July 7, 2008, 1:59 pm 72.91.250.131 Hello: I was at my local library thumbing through a book (a rare book) titled "Spode/Copeland Transfer-Printed Patterns found at 20 Hudson's Bay Co. Sites" by Lynne Sussman. The book shows black and white photos of patterns that this lady found from archeological digs at these sites. I came across a pattern that I have not seen before. It is called "Wellington" with pattern number B907 It shows scenes of the battles of the Duke of Wellington bordered by trophies. The scenes are named. The author made the prints in the book from copper plates from the factory but the plates were worn so the prints in the book were poor. Has anyone seen this pattern and can you tell me what the titles of the scenes are and what shapes they appeared on? What is the color scheme? Is this pattern documented elsewhere? "The Wellington Service comprised a series of plain prints, produced in different colours, depicting some of his battles and important events. They are recorded in the 'B' Pattern Book with numbers in the B900s." This was late in the Copeland & Garrett period (1833-47). The 'B' Pattern Book might be found through inter-library loan. Some members of the Spode Society in the U.K. have copies.  Post a Response

Re: Help with a copeland and garrett pattern Posted by Andrew J Pye on July 11, 2008, 11:06 am, in reply to "Re: Help with a copeland and garrett pattern" 84.92.89.69 Hi Chris The mention in the Review was merely a footnote from the Editor to an article about a Felspar Porcelain bust of the Duke of Wellington made by Copeland & Garrett and Connie has quoted the footnote in full. There were no shapes or colours. The bust was believed to have been made about 1835, when the Duke of Wellington was a guest of the W T Copeland, then Lord Mayor of London, at one of the Mayoral Banquets. It was late in Wellington's career to produce a bust as he had been ousted as Prime Minister and, whilst he remained active in politics, his main position was as Comander in Chief of the British Army. In the Dictionary it says that several of the Wellington china scenes were copied from illustrations in a 3 volume biography by W H Maxwell and published 1839-1841. I have never actually seen any of this china, although there was a sauce tureen printed in black with Battle of Busaco on Ebay Express not long ago. I was not aware that the B Number Pattern Book had been copied, so I am not sure what Connie meant about trying to obtain a copy, perhaps she meant of the Review? If you want to know more about the B Number pattern book and what it contains I can let you have a brief summary from Robert Copeland's mark book. The "Battle of Busaco" is one of them. The prints in the book are all in black and white and none of them are on a shape. The prints are somewhat fuzzy because the plates they were produced from to create the prints are worn. The B pattern book features underglaze patterns. I assume that these scenes were probably transfer printed underglaze and then painted over.  Post a Response

The response to the one on the Spode Museum could go on for pages. Are you a collector, do you actually know this pattern, do you know about transferware, what are you actually trying to find out? Not being critical, but where are your questions heading? The Sussman book is a wonderful source of info and it is not rare, as many of us have a copy. Yet you seem to know about B number patterns! As for my response to the Spode museum. Since the museum is closed I wanted to know if there were any publications available to the public that illustrated the items in their collection.  Post a Response

Unless you can find a collector of this elusive pattern it may be difficult to find out more. The fact that the printing plates were re-used for a later design suggests that Wellington may not have had a long life. I did find a plate again printed in black with Col Maxwell's Last Charge at Assaye size 8.5" 22cm, which sold at auction in 2003, so with the sauce tureen that's a couple of shapes for starters. ". He shows a meat dish or platter with Storming of Guidad Rodrigo and a dessert dish with Skirmish near Busaco on page 35. I suspect that the first title might be a spelling mistake??  Post a Response
