English advertising pot lid, diameter of this example unknown. Text: “Wm. Clayton & Cos Bears Grease / 72 Watling Street, London” (England). We have not been able to locate information on the producer, Wm. Clayton, although the lid is shown in HoughtonLaydonTaylor2018, pl 37, pg 275, with an indicated diameter of 72 mm (2.83 in.). Bears grease was used as a pomade. This pattern/lid most likely 1850-70. According to the knowledgeable eBay seller, the pattern is “very rare, three known”.
