Hi Betsy,
The Transferware Collectors Club concentrates on British transferware from 1760-1900 which puts your question out of the realm of our research and study. I have researched and studied and collected willow pattern from the USA and Great Britain for about 40 years, but not the Japanese willow. The main reason is that most of the companies that made willow in the 20th century cannot be reached for discussion regarding their production. It is difficult to tell by looking at the pieces whether or not they were made with transfers from engraved copper plates; however, my best guess would be that mid-20th century willow pattern (Occupied Japan) would have been produced using decals.
