I love a puzzle and I often buy pieces on ebay just because I don’t know what they are.
I have just received these cups and saucers printed underglaze in black, and I really don’t know what to make of them. The cups and saucers are marriages; the patterns and borders are quite different. Shallow chips do seem to indicate a buff coloured body on both.
The cups are printed with a very typical rustic scene with a shepherd, dog and sheep, a ruin, windmill, cottage and a couple of yokels. My first guess was a North-East England manufacturer and mid 19th century? I had assumed that they were just badly discoloured, and that may be the case with the cups- although I am not at all sure, but the saucers have a definite yellowish glaze.
There are flecks of white visible on the underside but I can’t be sure if this is showing through the glaze or incorporated in the glaze itself. The pattern and even style of design is on the saucers is unfamiliar to me and I can’t date them either although I don’t make them particularly early. Perhaps they aren’t English? I’m afraid the photos have washed the colour out a little; they do have a distinctly yellow colour.
If you tell me they are only ten years old, I won’t be too upset (although I do think they have a bit more age than that) If anyone can offer any ideas on these pieces I would be most grateful.
