Hi Arlene,
You have a piece of white ironstone china made in England by Anthony Shaw for the American market. The mark you describe is called the Royal Arms mark and is the mark Shaw used most frequently. According to Godden's Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks, Shaw had a factory in Tunstall, Staffordshire from c. 1851-60 and Burslem, Staffordshire from c. 1860-1900. His son joined the business c. 1882 when the mark changed to A. Shaw & Son.
