As a follow-up to David's comments about 'counterfeit' transferware, there IS one well-documented case, in the mid-19th Century, of William Smith & Co. marking their wares as Wedgwood in hopes of benefiting from the name. So egregious was this violation that the English legal system had to step in and force the Smith company to cease and desist. I am sure it is written up elsewhere at length, but the Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery, by A. W. Coysh & Dick Henrywood includes information on this caper (Vol. 1, p. 340). Modern day counterfeits are much harder to pull off, simply because of the expense associated with creating a pottery factory!
