Sheriff J. T. Tormey was elected in December 1869 and served until January 16, 1871 when he resigned. Tormey was evidently charged with an assault with intent to murder. He plead guilty in May 1871 to a lesser charge of simple assault and paid a fine in the amount of ten dollars. It would appear that he committed the crime while still in office.
