I am following up on the Joseph Tormey story, and was interested to see your blog. Joseph was my father's brother. My father was John Terrence, who was about five or six at the time of the incident. (I think he was the youngest in the family.) Their mother (my grandmother, your great grandmother), Catherine, passed away about four years later (approximately 1927); and their father, Peter, died about ten years after the event (about 1933).
The memorial, as you say, stands in the centre of Moate. If my memory serves me, another brother also had been caught up in the troubles of 1923.
As a matter of interest, my parents moved to Africa after WWII. John, my father, passed away in 1999 at 81.
My sister and I came to New Zealand a few years ago, and she is now living in Australia. Your dad would be our cousin. Our children (7 between us) would be your second cousins, I guess.
It would be interesting to know your granddad's and your dad's names, if you have time to persue this blog!
I wish you a happy easter season, Diana Kathryn Tormey
