I, too, am interested in the old lead/gold refinery in Contra Costa County, California. It would make for an interesting case study for students of environmental law. I read a newspaper article from circa 1960 about the smelter's operations. It said that the plant had two locker rooms; workers had to walk unclothed past a guard between the locker rooms so as not to smuggle gold out of the plant. The article also said that the work clothes were incinerated at the plant so as to capture any residual gold dust. In the late 1800s, the Selby shot tower was one of the tallest structures in San Francisco.
