I seriously doubt it will change anything. There are way to many people that play for 2nd...in my opinion is same thing as throwing the game. If scoring was different and there was ONLY 1 winner...they would be forced to play for low 
But I know what you are thinking...this is a social gathering tournament many different types of players. But in the same aspect you put to social games what does it matter to players to win or lose...they lose nothing and gain nothing. You gonna get the same results whether it is rated or social games. My opinion again---tournaments are set up for the competitiveness of the game. You don't want to play competively than you need to play social games. Have a great day
