I have had a similar experience. I am no chemist, but my understanding is that petroleum-based products, when combined with black powder residue, creates a much harder "gunk" than the same residue when mixed with a non-petroleum-based lube. I use melted crisco to lube the fiber wads that I use in my flint smoothbore. The fouling seems to stay softer, and I can usually fire 15 to 20 shots without swabbing.
