I have picked up brown flints off the streets of Paris, brought them home, screwed them into the jaws of a flintlock and fired the gun just fine. No knapping required. One doesn't need to be a great knapper to form a flint into usable shape.
I wonder if there's any good flint in south africa. I'll look.
