I just got back from the Ed Green Memorial Rifle Frolic. The shoot was put on in memory of all those muzzleloading people who went under last year. It was felt that having a shoot in their honor would be the best memorial to them. Wyoming lost three people last year. Even though the name of the shoot was one of them all three were honored.
It was a little chancy. Springtime in the Rockies can be a crap shoot as far as the weather goes. On Wednesday a pretty herky storm moved in with a lot of wind and snow. I was going to leave about noon on Friday but there were numerous road closures thoughout the state. The storm was supposed to be done on Friday. I checked Friday morning and the freeway between Buffalo and Sheridan was still closed. I decided to wait until 2:00 to see if everything cleared up. I checked the Web at 2:00 and all the roads were open so I scrambled to finish packing up (forgetting a bunch of stuff) and got out of here about 3:00.
The roads were clear, even over the Bighorns. There was still stiff wind in a few places but not near what it was.
I made it to the shoot site around 6:00, which gave me time to set up camp and cook some dinner.
The next two days were great, sunny and almost no wind. It was chilly at night, about 20 degrees but the days were in the 70s. People came from all over Wyoming and Montana for the event.
The shoots were mostly primative, gongs and spinners, with some paper. I shot lousy except for one match. There were plenty of blanket shoots and one long game full contact badmitten for the kids. It looked more like lacrosse than badmitten.
It was good to see old friends after a long winter and have a little fun.
