I moulded up 116 of the .520 roundballs using my new Jeff Tanner mould a couple of days ago, my first experience using a bag-type mould. I had much better luck pouring the lead from my dipper, which has a small spout, into the hole in the mould than like I do with a sprue cutter-type mould, which is to seal the hole with the dipper's spout and then pour. This eliminated the tendency of the lead, as it cooled, to pull back into the mould, sometimes leaving a hole/chimney in the sprue and ball. I lopped off the protruding sprue with wire snips and then filed away the remainder. This afternoon, I found that 60 grains of FFFg Swiss followed by a LV lubed felt wad followed by the .520 ball in a .025 pillow ticking LV lubed patch shot a 1" group at 30 yards in the .54 caliber/28 gauge smoothbore. Using 70 grains of Goex FFg produced a slightly larger group. I didn't have to mess with the sights, which usually isn't the case with a new-to-me muzzleloader. I'll be ready Thursday morning should a whitetail wonder by. Best of luck to my fellow muzzleloading deer hunters!
