Posted by Riley/MN on 9/14/2007, 1:30 pm I didn't make it up to camp for opening night (Sept 1), but come Sun. night Dave had set me up in a ground blind about 15 yds from a bait. I sat most of the late afternoon without much activity, as I had my shooting lane set up in front of me to the bait, with my muzzle resting out the opening of the blind. The door to my right was slighly unzipped and the window to my left was open just enough to let some air move. As late afternoon shifted into early evening I noticed something brown moving JUST OUTSIDE THE BLIND. All of a sudden a pine marten ran up to the door, stood up on it's back legs and looked at me. A couple of seconds only and then it ran off, but it had been within arm's reach! Within five seconds it was back. Standing up and checking me out. I was thinking "I've never even seen a marten in the wild" and I'm sure he was saying "I've NEVER seen a Riley in the wild before". So he scurried off again and a couple minutes later I noticed movement again, but this time straight out in front of me, and black. Sure looked like a bear ear. Yep there's the nose comin into view from the right. <position rifle, get ready now...> Now a head, then a body-a little one. So I'm now sitting watching this little guy chompin on doughnuts, looks over at me, <hmm, something looks different over there, but I think I'll have another doughnut> takes another goodie, looks over his shoulder and BAM takes off to the left. <pulse quickens> Just as soon as he left, he was back again, diggin in the doughnuts, so I don't know what spooked him... Then I saw more movement to the right and sure enough, Mr. Marten runs up to my door, stands up and looks at me again. He's sniffin, and stretchin his neck out and all of a sudden jumps up on top of the nylon blind I'm sitting in. Now a marten on a nylon blind is not a normal sound for a bear to hear in the woods, so this guy takes a break from his doughnuts and looks over at us to try to figure us out, but then decides he's pretty hungry and should maybe have another doughnut. So as soon as his head goes into the doughnut pile, I took my finger and poked the lump in the top of the blind where the marten was sitting. Well instead of scurrying off, Mr Marten runs over to the window on left side of the blind and says "Who was that? Was that you that poked me in the butt?" Okay, I didn't hear him say that, but I'm sure he was thinking it. But he did stick his nose in and try to figure out what was in there... And of course the bear looks over, kinda concerned, then decides to go back for another doughnut. So while he wasn't lookin, I kinda poked/slapped the marten in the nose, and that was the last I saw of him. He spooked off the bear and that was the last I saw of him as well, but he was not a shooter. Maybe a little over 100lbs. Anyway, that's my report so far. Now I'm going to go pack up the 'burban and head north to give it one more try. ~Riley
