Posted by Thos/Ma It was our annual Town Day celebration, so we Minutemen set up on the lawn of the historical Jason Russell House to give our demonstrations. I ran ball, others did some drill and firing demonstrations. This year we had wooden dummy muskets so every so often we'd line the kids up and march them around the lawn. Afterwards we gave them each a little Grand Union flag. We have an enthusiastic 11-year old member (we have field-promoted him to Junior Ensign) who lead them around in full colonials. A couple visitors said, "You know, I have a black-powder gun stuck in a closet. I should dig it out". Which we heartily encouraged. Despite the heat, it was a good day. I only burned myself once and didn't set the lawn on fire. That might have upset our "landlords" the Historical Society. Best of all, I managed to cast good ones _while people were watching_. Any of you that have done demos for the public know what I mean: you can run any number by yourself, but as soon as a group gathers, your ladle cools off or runs low (or both), you cast wrinkly half-balls, or you miss the sprue hole ENTIRELY. But as I say, that didn't happen - much - on Saturday. YMH&OS,

It was in the low 90's, sunny & humid (at least by our standards) here in Maffachufetts-Bay on Saturday, so naturally it was the perfect day to stand out in the sun over a charcoal fire handling molten lead!
