Steve and I got up bright and early and headed to Conneaut only to find it chocolate and over the banks. We headed back towards home and stopped by one of the smaller streams and had a decent morning. Lots of folks had already left and more were leaving because the fish had lock-jaw. Well, they didn't have lock jaw if you had some pink flies!
We caught fish on pink sucker spawn, pink crystal meth, pink glow bug egg patterns, and pink estaz. They would not hit white, cream, yellow, or anything else. Well, a few hit light orange in the morning, but by afternoon it was ONLY pink! If you didn't have pink, you were NOT catching fish.
Towards evening it really got stupid. Fish started arriving in phenomenal numbers. And would bang pink estaz like crazy. I actually had to go to a twenty pound leader and tippet to keep from breaking off flies. I have no idea how many fish I landed, but for the last two hours of day light we both caught and landed dozens and dozens of fish. Biggest was 11-pounds. Lots were 7 to 9-pounds. Many were silver and almost all beat the water like an outboard motor half out of the water. Had one fish rip off line faster than any bonefish ever thought of, took the fly line and about a fifty of backing, trashed around like a washing machine and threw the fly. The fly line went across my index finger so fast it burnt by finger. Almost 24-hours later you can still see the red mark! We never saw the fish through all the water. He (she) was large and silver, that's all we know. Steve also had a couple fish that beat the water so severely that when the broke the tipped or threw the fly we really didn't how big the fish was because we actually never saw it through the water spray. Best day in Ohio ever!
