Its different. I've always enjoyed simming games. In the early days, it wasnt easy because most games wouldnt allow you to have CPU versus CPU. But I would try to automate as much as possible.
I would sim in Civilization II, for example. There was a way where you could set human players to zero and then just watch the action. It was actually pretty dull so I didn't do it much. I think everything would just go black when you set it to zero players. Everything would advance, though so you'd just have to pause every so often to see the status of the world. Wasn't satisfying.
Years later, I would do it on Railroad Tycoon II. Again, it wasnt really built into the game, but I discovered that you could set AI players to zero. Then if you started a new company, your old railroad would convert to computer control. You'd still own it, though. So I would try to start a bunch of little companies and see them play out. They kind of competed against eachother but I owned them all. The AI was pretty poor and the game engine in general was seriously flawed so that wasnt so fun either. But I still did it quite a bit.
I would also sim in Championship Manager in spite of the fact that I dont like "football" in the slightest. Still cool to see how the computer plays it out, though.
And yeah, I simmed in a lot of sports games. Those are the ones where it's more prevelent. I'd always be excited when I'd see there was an option for CPU versus CPU. Often times there wasnt, as I said.
I'm just fascinated by the AI and like to see how the computer plays everything. It's not really meant to be played this way but it's cool to see how it works.
But Fire Pro beats all games when it comes to simming. And I say it's maybe the only game with simming in mind.
And I'm not the only person who sims in Fire Pro. Indeed, from what I see on the Fire Pro Club board it seems that most people sim and never or almost never play.
Indeed, I'm certainly not the biggest the Fire Pro simming fanatic. There are dudes on that board who create their own original wrestler edits. Sometimes based on real wrestlers, sometimes comic book characters or whatever, sometimes totally invented. And they create their own federations. And they create cards. Like who's wrestling who and what sort of match. Like they were doing a wrestling tv show. And they role play the characters partly based on the results of the matches. There's a whole sub-forum at the Fire Pro Club for just all this. I don't do any of that, but I don't begrudge those who do and I can fully understand the appeal of all of that. It's just not how I play the game.
For instance, today was looking for the stats of the referees in FPZ. Eventually, I found it in my Fire Pro folder. But when I was looking online, I found a forum where people were talking about referees. They were asking what referee people prefer using. Some dude said, "I always have a bear referee my matches".
There's no bear referee. That dude created a referee (you can create referees, obviously) using the bear appearance. And if that guy enjoys having a bear officiate matches in his little Fire Pro simming world, who am I to say that he's wrong? There's a myriad of ways to play and/or sim Fire Pro.
And the depth of that game is crazy. You can edit the moves, the stats, even the logic. Essentially editing the AI.
And the matches themselves are entertaining. Again, I'm not alone in enjoying them. YouTube is full of simmed wrestling matches. And people watch, rate, and comment.
If you'd play Fire Pro, you'd understand it's greatness. Maybe you played the Super Fire Pro Wrestling SNES rom and yeah, it's a great game. But FPD and FPR are worlds ahead of it.
Its also great that there's hundreds of characters. There's 350 default characters and I plan on adding a couple hundred more. Its crazy amounts of characters. The possibility for role-playing is endless. And you're never too old to use your imagination.
And yeah, I like wrestling so it helps that the game is about wrestling. But I say that even if the game was about...I dont know...bowling or something. If a bowling game had the amount of depth that the Fire Pro games have, I'd probably spend a lot of time on it.
Here's a video of a dude who re-created WrestleMania VII in Fire Pro Returns. He created the ring logo, changed the ring colors and ropes, created that Earl Hebner referee, created all the wrestlers, man. That must have taken some time. I particularly like how he did the hooded match.
The custom intro he did with some video editing software. But if you think he stopped at WrestleMania, you'd be wrong. He also did the same thing for WrestleMania VIII and WrestleMania XII.
